The second Siberian International Congress was focused on ‘The problems of higher and specialised education of choreography in Siberia’ and was held in Novosibirsk.

The congress, chaired by Natalia Kosovikova, academician of the Petrine Academy of Sciences and Arts, was attended by a large number of dance scholars, academics, practitioners and graduate students.

It dealt with issues related to reforms in choreographic professional education in Russia and the signing of a declaration on the participation in the Bologna Process on European Higher Education.

Meetings were held with current and former artists from the renowned Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet theatre, reputedly the largest and most technically advanced theatre in Russia, which enjoys a reputation on par with the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

Online contributions, reports and correspondence were submitted by experts from Egypt, France, Taiwan and Ukraine. Other contributions came from foreign dance professionals invited to the congress from Romania, Latvia and Malta.

Bayona contributed to the congress with master classes in classical ballet for children and ballet teachers. She also shared her experience of teaching private dance schools and explained the benefits of this system, especially when teaching ballet leads to a professional career.

Bayona described her interaction with children and teachers as rewarding, especially when she taught advanced techniques and the Enrico Cecchetti Diploma. She found students and teachers very open to different methods of teaching, particularly the romantic period in classical ballet.

The congress was organised by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Novosibirsk Region in collaboration with the National Choreographic Council of Russia and the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet.

Bayona has been invited to the next congress due to be held in Moscow next year, as well as to sit on a dance jury for an international choreographic competition and to give master classes in Novosibirsk in January.
